Tasty Treats

I don't know anything about the party advertised on this poster, but I'll be damned if it isn't the best poster I've ever seen.

I would like to give everyone a New Year's gift, just in time for any potential New Year's dance parties happening in about, oh, 48 hours, give or take. Could these songs be the very definition of a dancefloor-filler, if that word even exists? Is there any circumstance in which I could hear this song and not want to cut rug for hours on end? When, if ever, will I stop asking rhetorical questions?

Seriously though these songs are great.

Remember the Spoons

Many folks will probably know the Spoons best for their single "Nova Heart", which, while nonetheless quintessentially defining their unique, vintage indie synth-pop sound, doesn't nearly do justice to what is surely the best tune I've heard in the past few weeks -

Smiling in Winter throws you onto a dancefloor with what must surely be the only just-uptempo-enough swung drum machine track that could ever keep up with a bass groove this dancey.

Hudson Mohawke

So over on this west coast we've got a little shop called Ditch Records. A few months ago I found an EP in their New Releases bin by this relatively unknown Scot on Warp records: Hudson Mohawke.

Polyfolk Dance EP

Hudson Mohawke - Monde

The track I posted from "The Polyfolk Dance EP" takes all the good of Boards of Canada and adds some pop and soul. "Polyfolk Dance" was followed by a full length released in October called "Butter".

If you recall the Alex Metric remix of Phoenix's Lisztomania from a few months back, you should recall that that track is goddamn awesome. And good news!! I found another Alex Metric remix! And boy is it ever a beauty. Frantic and manic dance energy contained within:

I don't listen to J Dilla really, but I am well aware that he is goddamn good. And I stumbled upon a cover of his track Circus by some guy named Brabe. I now want to listen to more J Dilla.

Chromeo's DJ Kicks is chock a block full of French disco and synth pop, and this track by Carmen, circa 1984, is both rare and ridiculously dancey. Thanks for showing me this one, Chromeo.

And to round it all out a pretty straightforward dancefloor banger by some guy named Merdan Taplak. Best name in dance music? Very possible.

some more South London

Two different tracks here that are both out of South London (which I think is good enough reason to post them together). The first is by Silkie. It's the opening track from City Limits Volume 1. Sort of progressive, synth-blippy dubstep that fits in with a lot of the funksteppy stuff outta 2009. Pretty fun stuff. You can tell the genre is going more mainstream, but this proves it's not yet a bad thing. The other track by XX is a little more well known, so I probably don't need to go into much explanation. The picture is not XX though. It's Silkie. XX are a bunch of ugly white 20-years-olds so I didn't include their picture.

Silkie - Concrete Jungle (2009) - 8:30
XX - Infinity (2009) - 5:13

FM Belfast

For everyone out there who was first taken in the by Architecture In Helsinki school of infectious, hook-based quirky-nerd-dance, there have been few releases to date that have made any headway in evolving the unique vibe captured by anthemic jams such as AIH's "Do the Whirlwind" or "Heart it Races". Until now, of course. Enter Iceland's FM Belfast, whose T61 breakout track "Synthia" kicks like a jager-bombed horse at a Hot Chip show. If it's irresistible hook and unstoppable groove weren't enough, the song is about a broken synthesizer. Good gracious. Go and listen to it.

Night by REMIX

I brought you Chromeo's new (sensational) single "Night by Night" a couple of weeks ago, and I sure hope you guys liked it because the blogosphere has spit out two spicy remixes of it!

The Tremulance was first on the scene to remix it, and their version is awash in big synths and a groovy bass line. The vibe is very euphoric, but retains the light-hearted tone of the original (mostly via Pee's talk box, which has somehow become even more badass in the time since Fancy Footwork).

Siriusmo really brings the noise with his remix, however. I am personally a massive fan of Siriusmo's curious blend of slick keyboard and weird-as-fuck production (not to mention his affiliation with Modeselektor), and his remix of this tune is absolutely vintage Siriusmo. There's a sick bassline, weird keyboards, and an extremely wild breakdown. Listen to this one dudes, it's the effin' balls.

Sonny Fodera

It feels like ages since i last posted. But none the less i have a terrific producer/Dj haling from Australia. A deep house adventure with a unique ability to incorporate jazz, funk, and hip-hop. I have his Beatdown EP which i plan on sharing with you all followed by one of my favorites!

Enjoy the tracks! there will be plenty more coming

HOLY SWEET MERCY

If the handsome mugs of P-Thugg and Dave1 don't get you both musically and sexually excited, then I can't be sure what is wrong with you. Especially when they have released, yes, a new single upon the masses. "Night By Night" is vintage Chromeo, chock full of talk box, killer guitar riffs and sexual innuendo. Enjoy ladies and gents.

Jamie Lidell

Jamie Lidell, ladies and gentlemen. A little bit soul, a little bit dance, a lot awesome. I think it is safe to say that Jamie Lidell may be the blackest white soul singer to ever come out of Cambridgeshire. I knew little about him for the past two years or so after being informed of his general awesomeness, but finally took the leap and checked him out and boy oh boy was I ever NOT disappointed. The man can sing, the man can groove, and the man can make seriously killer and slick sounding tracks. So to celebrate let's hear a couple of tracks!

BANGALTER

Man? Robot? Nope, Thomas Bangalter. And boy oh boy I do not know why I waited as long as I did to check out this guy's stuff. Besides being a film director and, you know, being in Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter has released some positively stupendous work on his label Roule. For anyone who likes Daft Punk (everyone with a brain) listening to Bangalter's solo work is like listening to unreleased Daft Punk tracks... except they WERE released. WHOA.

Seriously, I really dig this stuff so go to the Roule profile at Discogs and buy something on vinyl or something if you are a nerd.

Cassius - Feeling For You (Les Rythmes Digitales Mix)

If Cassius is mentioned on the internet, the names Air and Daft Punk always seem to come up as well, which means I really should have listened to them more by now. However outside of one or two tracks in the last year or so I have largely ignored a duo who seems to be widely respected. I wish I knew more about them to pass along, but as of now all I know is they are a French electro-house duo... exactly like Air and Daft Punk.

This track features a rippin' funk vocal sample (Michael Jackson? If not someone almost as awesome) and one hell of a juicy bassline. What else can someone possibly ask for in a house track?

Aaaand the original for y'all to check out as well:

aaand another 180.....

This just happens to be my first blog post ever, am I doing it right?! I'll make this one short and sweet so I can only go up from here. WOODHANDS is the band....DANCER is the song. I was lucky enough to catch their show at the Sled Island music fest in Calgary and they really surprised me. Unreal analog synth action, enough said.

Woodhands - Dancer

Electric Youth

Toronto seems to have no shortage of dreamy, synth-soaked electro-dance acts these days. Latest on the scene is high school sweetheart duo Electric Youth, whose single "Faces" has just been released on a 17-track compilation from the new French collective Valerie. The collective includes a host of increasingly popular producers, including dreamwave posterchildren Anoraak, Keenhouse, Russ Chimes and the inimitable Futurecop!

But enough talk. Have a listen to Electric Youth's "Faces", and you too will probably be hustling to the nearing "download" link for the rest of the compilation. Enjoy!

Joy Orbison

What up.

Dubstep moved from its dnb/garage/dubby roots to the metallic sounding bangers of 2007 and 2008. Some saw this as the end of a genre which at one time had the promise of saving dance music from its predictable formulas, foraying riddims and tempos into slower, syncopated, uncharted territory. These naysayers were wrong of course. Dance music always reinvents itself. The filthy dubstep coming out in the past couple of years was in part a response to the maxed out electro blasting in clubs next door. What's cool about dubstep is that it seems to have already moved on from '08. 2009 is all about breaking convention and bringing back the funk. It started off in January with the wonky reworking of Scuba's Twitch by Vex'd. Now, garage/dubstep/house/tech/breaks and everything in between is fair game to weave into a setlist, and the tracks coming out of this free for all bend the rules on all sides. One getting lots of hype is an unreleased anthem from Joy Orbison. The best way to get into this track is to listen to it in the context of Ben UFOs Hessle Audio promo mix (available here). It closes out the set, but is worth the wait.

Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo (mp3)

You can also find a lot of the music mentioned in this post at my sister blog here.

Etienne de CRAZY

I know what you're thinking: "That guy is DJing in the set for Hollywood Squares! WHERE IS WHOOPI GOLDBERG." Well I don't know where Whoopi Goldberg is, and I don't care because centre square or not, I bet you she is a shit DJ compared to this dude.

Etienne de Crecy is a French electronic producer, which in my books means he is awesome. In fact talking about a French electronic producer is sort of cliche on this short lived blog already, but this guy is legitimately pretty great. I wish I had some sort of biographical information to pass on, but my info stops at the French part, so I will simply share a couple of his tracks so you can share in the sweetness.

As a bonus here is a cool picture I found

99

I beak Calgary pretty frequently, but every once in a while this redneck town gives me a nice pleasant surprise. Usually this surprise comes in the form of horse poop in public places (especially during Stampede) but recently I was given a rare treat: two bangin' electro tunes from a local producer!

A friend pointed me in the direction of 99, who has already been featured on much more prominent and widely read Binary. Clearly a fan of French bangers, Ed Banger style, 99 delivers the goods pretty majorly on these two tracks.

The first track, Sans Fil, features a big nasty relentless bassline, spooky vocals and stabby organs. A recipe for success if ever I heard one.

I think I prefer this other track, though, with its never-ending climactic bassline and Oizo-style driving synths. And a cheeky dirty female vocal around the one minute mark doesn't hurt either.

Stay tuned, consistent posts coming soon!

Burial & Four Tet

I love Burial. Well not the guy, cause that'd be weird. I love his music. Love love love his stuff. His dark shifting and somehow urban-sounding soundscapes fascinated me all the more when he was still an anonymous artist.. a music which ostensibly reflected the feelings and attitudes of a specific place, in this case London, was strengthened by anonymity, I found. The sounds struck home as if they'd been somehow randomly generated by the city itself, as if the rain-slicked walls of the fish and chip shop had taken in the late night shit-talking, drunken confrontations and walks home alone at night from so many denizens that it had ejected something beautiful into the world.

My feelings about Four Tet aren't nearly as defined, mostly because I simply haven't listened to much of it, but what little of it I've heard has seemed dark, organic, shifting... overall pretty much great for some of the same reasons I like Burial.

Really, the two are made for each other, and they obviously knew this, as they have collaborated to great effect for two tracks, entitled Moth and Wolf Cub (having a hard time finding the files to purchase online, but you can buy the vinyl here). I can't say much about it, as the sound is entirely it's own, so just listen and enjoy. You won't regret it

Feeeeeeeeeelix!!!

If you are a Calgary dweller, there is one dance party that you are going to want to be at tonight. I am referring, of course, to the Felix Da Housecat show at Flames Central. Though I certainly can't speak volumes about FC's merit as a venue (all those Flames' logos really are a little much sometimes), it sure won't make much difference when Felix kicks up the beats.

To prove my point, here are a few treats from Felix's 2007 album "Virgo Blacktro & the Movie Disco". These newer tracks will likely be scoring some mileage on the stage tonight, and I couldn't be happier - VB&MD is every bit as slick, polished and infectious as you would hope to hear from someone as establishd as Felix. Let's have a listen.

Felix Da Housecat - Lookin' My Best

Felix Da Housecat - Nighttripperz

See you on the dance floor, suckas.

FUTURECOP

Either I'm crazy or those are two Power Gloves being worn by the protagonist of this image. At any rate, Futurecop! do indeed take us on a futuristic adventure. I hope you're not tired of dreamwave yet cause I'm certainly not, and this post is full of it!

Futurecop! so far as I can tell are veterans of the dreamwave style. If indeed I am right about that (and I am only guessing based on number of myspace hits, an inexact measure at best), then it shows through in the sense that their songs are fucking awesome. Some dreamwave has left me excited but at times bored, but Futurecop! seriously delivers the goods for every song I've heard. Here is a recent track as an example

Ghosthustler are (according to Binary, anyway) pretty serious fathers of dreamwave as well, and fittingly enough they took on Futurecop! in a song that "feels so good," as the chorus of this track will tell you in all its vocoded glory.

And here is a very silly track, essentially nothing more than a nostalgic hip hop a cappella with some sweet keys, which appears to have been an exclusive for Too Many Sebastians (an excellent blog by the by). I'm not sure if this is actually a Skee-Lo a cappella or if it uses the same lyrics or what but i dig the "I wish I was a little bit taller" breakdown in this bad boy

Cowboy funk

If someone was to tell me a Calgarian musician was making funk music, this is likely what I would picture. Funk-country. And this is coming from a local, not some Vancouver native taking cheap shots at the rednecks to the East.

However, local university radio station CJSW was able to turn me on to some great homestyle Calgary funky house, courtesy of Neighbour. I don't know a whole lot about this guy other than that he makes sick jams, and that he collaborates with local club DJ Wax Romeo as Neighbourhood Romeo

The first track is the standout title track of the three track EP on Juno (buy here), a funk-house beauty with some fat bass, killer beats and not-shabby-at-all rhymes. Not to mention stabby keys. Love me some good stabby keys.

While I don't enjoy Kolour Jam quite as much as the first track, the production is undoubtedly slick and the style remains intact.

Now I'm not really sure what the All Good Funk Alliance is, and maybe that makes me a bad Calgary music fan, but regardless there it is in my iTunes, and Neighbour and Wax Romeo both make an appearance on this mostly instrumental groovy funk jam. Not much else to say really...

Waves of dreaming

Dreamwave. After listening to a dreamwave track, that word will likely mean different things to different people. For some it will evoke a night drive in a bustling downtown cityscape. For others looking out the window of an airplane on a blanket of clouds at sunrise. Some may remember making a first nervous phone call to a serious junior high crush.

It doesn't really matter what it evokes though, because dreamwave fucking kicks ass. After many producers spent a good chunk of time dedicated to making the loudest wildest synths and basslines possible, a few dudes and dudettes have been drawing back from the distortion and leaning heavily on big clean synths and nostalgic vocal lines. The result is a refreshing new direction for electronic music, and one that is currently being done very well by some very unknown artists.

First is Tesla Boy, a Russian outfit who by the looks of their myspace have a couple of dates coming up in London... big opportunities ahead it seems! At any rate, Neon Love is typical dreamwave: shrouded lyrics, yearning synth lines, relentless bass.

Tennishero shows us all what seduction sounds like in Sweden... with an opening line like "I was yours and you were mine," this track is pure nostalgia in three minutes and fourteen seconds, but not in a shit cheesy way. This track brings back all the positive memories of first love and steamy makeout sessions with your parents sleeping upstairs..

We Plants Are Happy Plants, aside from having a name that happily straddles awesome and weird as fuck, have a pretty psychedelic dreamwave offering that got some serious love on hype machine last week... starts with an awesome sample of philosophical musings and proceeds into mind-melting synths. Enjoy!

The Twelves can't seem to miss. They are the class of the remixing world at the moment, and their most recent song choice, a cover of Daft Punk's Nightvision, is top notch. Recent efforts by them include:

and, of course, the track I just mentioned, which is just one more example of the Twelves' success with regards to carving out an awesome, slick and recognizable sound for themselves.

French Grizzlies

Fred Falke is a gun. And not the kind of gun that Megatron turns into, more like the kind that makes really awesome tracks, whether remixed or original. In fact he is such a gun that he played bass on Daft Punk's albums, for the uninitiated into French House-dom. If that's not enough of a name check, I don't know what is.

So since Fred has made a mini-return to the blogosphere after what seems like an ages-long absence (in reality probably two weeks) with two remixes I have just recently come across, and a couple relatively unlikely original song sources as well.

The first is a take on a track by garage-rock-soul-diva band The Gossip, whose singer belts 'em out like she's Aretha Franklin Jr, except instead of soul and funk backing her up it's huge dirty indie rock. Fred cleans them up a bit here but Beth's pipes remain untouched.

Grizzly Bear are certainly someone I never expected to translate well to the electronic realm, as their quirky glitch-folk style is a bit short on rhythm and heavy on weirdness, but this track is a reminder that sweet remixes are only as impossible as we want them to be...

I've never heard of Mini Viva, and quite frankly have never listened to them despite the Fred Falke mix of Left My Heart In Tokyo being ridiculously sweet. I know nothing about them except that this track makes me want to strut around downtown Tokyo wearing red cowboy boots, jeans four sizes too small and a snakeskin suit jacket.

And an old classic

WHOA

Well if anyone reading this happens to read other, more reputable blogs (i.e. every other blog on the internet, including Harry Potter erotic fanfic blogs) they may have come across this track recently but anyone who hasn't will be thanking me as soon as the fat bass and warbly jangly synths ninja kick them straight in the face. I won't say too much and spoil it but suffice to say that failing to download this track may be the single biggest mistake you make in all your natural born life. Or maybe not, I don't know. Either way just listen.

CANADA

Above is on page 1 of a google image search of "canada music." While I am not sure this image is a 100% accurate representation of what Canada has to bring to the table musically, it is certainly awesome.

More importantly, here are some actual Canadian artists, who may or may not be naked and playing keytars.

K-os has been somewhat off the radar lately, but popped up recently in the blogosphere, albeit briefly. The track initially caught my eye because it is a remix of what is by far my favourite Tokyo Police Club track, Your English Is Good. I was curious as to how a straight-up indie rock track could be interpreted by a hip hopper, and frankly skeptical, but I think it is mostly a success.. the remix is much more subdued than the original, and k-os contributes a pretty slick verse.

On a lesser known note, Bit Funk came my way via the excellent Binary blog. Binary has been consistently flogging a new style they call dreamwave, which is a lot like what you would imagine based on the name... big smooth spacey synths and vocals. Bit Funk is Canada's contribution to this style, and it is slick as fuck.

Deadmau5 is pretty well-established from the perspective of any electronic music aficionado, but his tracks are worth retreading... Calvin Harris' latest single is pretty ace on its own but Deadmau5's remix eclipses it, in my humble opinion. Harris' sound and Deadmau5's don't seem too compatible on the surface, as Harris (especially on this track) is all about big summery, light-hearted anthems, whereas the mau5 is dark, long and winding... the two are entwined perfectly here however

And for kicks, here is a recent Deadmau5 fave of mine...

Wahhhhzoooooh

If Billboard's list of number one dance hits in the USA is any indication, in 1999 the club and dance scene in North America was dominated by the likes of Cher, Madonna, Enrique Iglesias and "Funky Green Dogs." While lack of taste in North America is certainly not surprising, and while I wouldn't try to claim that Billboard charts are 100% accurate as a barometer of taste, the fact remains that many club-goers in the US were subjected to an awful lot of ordinary dance music.

On the other hand we have Europe, particularly England, France and Germany. While there isn't as much data on overall plays in Europe, historically musical movements (outside of hip hop) have started in Europe and moved across the pond some time later.. Basement Jaxx are featured on that 1999 list, but the style they helped create has taken much longer to arrive full force in North America. Similarly, Daft Punk scored a couple of massive singles that crossed the Atlantic in the mid-90s, but "popular" North American tastes remained focused on garbage like rap-rock and watered-down wanky hip hop. Meanwhile from the 90s on, the subject of this post was toiling away in France, and becoming fucking good in the process.

Monsieur Oizo

Oizo is a member of Ed Banger records, one of the more illustrious record labels in electronic music. Fellow artists include Uffie, Busy P and Justice... no lightweights around there, let me tell ya. For me, his greatest asset is his eclecticism...he is generally just weird as fuck, but he can just easily write a sick hip-hop influenced beat as a sound-system smashing club banger.

Remember how people in the US were listening to Whitney Houston in 1999? Well French clubs were rocking a Oizo track in that year called Flat Beat. I'd try and describe it but the attempt would be futile. It doesn't quite have the massive bass and frantic energy that more recent club hits have had, but listening to this track and realizing it came out ten years ago is a clear indicator of Oizo's influence and general forward thinking... legendary track.

Jumping ahead a few years, Oizo's latest album, Lamb's Anger, was released in November of 2008. The single, Positif, bears the unmistakable watermarks of Oizo; big buzzy synths, choppy breakdowns, and vocal samples by some hot-sounding French bird.

And my personal favourite Oizo track, and not just because of the name. Gay Dentists starts out choppy and abrasive as fuck, but the slow formation of a ridiculously danceable beat is well worth the wait. The drop took me by surprise the first time I heard it, and boy was it a pleasant surprise. Wait till about the 2:00 mark.

Modeselektor: Awesome or incredible?

The answer to that question: BOTH. They are a group about whom I can make the very rare claim that I have yet to hear a song theirs which I don't adore, and I challenge anyone who downloads these songs to refute my claim that they are the coolest motherfuckers on the planet. Seriously, look at that picture. Are you telling me you WOULDN'T want them DJing your party?

These tracks aren't nearly as dirty as the tracks from the last post... Modeselektor's appeal lies in their polished sound. Where someone like MSTRKRFT or the Bloody Beetroots seem to want noisy bass for the sake of noisy bass (which I have no problem with, understand), the guys in Modeselektor are very good at tweaking and perfecting until their synths and drums etc. are perfect for whatever it is they are writing... perfectly appropriate and tasteful parts are the order of the day. And those that remix them (particularly Siriusmo) seem to understand that and reflect that in their remixes.

BIG DIRTY BEATS

My first post goes out to Steve Aoki, so congratulations Steve,
on being the first shout out on an unknown blog deriving from
the cultural hotspot known as Calgary, Alberta. His show was
the perfect bangin' dirty bassline electro show, which is
thankfully becoming more and more common these days in
Calgary. The crowd was initially only alright, as there were lots
of drunk-as-fuck people stumbling only partially in time with
the music, but Steve was the perfect remedy for that, as he
brought the noise massively and the crowd loved every second.
So to thank Steve I would like to make available the centerpiece
of the show, WARP 1.9, featuring Steve Aoki as well as the
Bloody Beetroots.

This track is massive, filthy, noisy, loud, and most of all,
fucking awesome. In fact it was so cool that he played it twice,
possibly even three times depending on how bad my memory
fromthe night was. Be warned, it is best played in the middle
of a massive night.

Steve Aoki's label, Dim Mak, has quite a few decent DJs gracing
its roster, including Armand Van Helden, Felix Cartal, Shinichi
Osawa, and Canada's dirty beat kings MSTRKRFT. While their
newest album, Fist of God, is only decent, A-Trak, another
legendary Canadian, put out a pretty unreal remix of the lead
single Bounce. It retains the dirty roots of the original but gives
it a bit more groove and subtlety. ENJOY BITCHES
